Gardaí have warned women not to walk alone in the late night and early morning following an attack on a women in Forster Court in the early hours of yesterday morning. It is believed the assailant may have received a bite mark to his hand in the attack.
The woman was walking to work from her home in Forster Court between 4.30am and 4.45am yesterday when she was set upon by a lone attacker who approached her from behind, put his hand over her mouth, and dragged her into a green area in the estate.
The woman struggled with her attacker and managed to remove his balaclava and free herself. He then fled in the direction of College Road.
The culprit is described as approximately five feet five inches tall, and he wore a black jacket, black trousers, a balaclava, and gloves. He also carried a rucksack.
Gardaí have appealed to anyone who was in the area of Bohermore, Forster Court, or College Road in the early hours of yesterday and who may have seen this man, to come forward.
Gardaí who searched the area in the immediate aftermath of the attack found a green rucksack with an orange triangle and a fluorescent reflective stripe. This bag also bore the logo ‘PX’ and the words ‘pro x’. Gardaí are attempting to ascertain whether this rucksack belonged to the attacker, and are asking anyone with information on it to contact Galway Garda Station.
A Garda spokesperson said the fact that the man wore a balaclava and gloves for the attack was “sinister”.
“But for the quick reaction of the injured party the gardaí are satisfied that this would have developed into a far more serious incident,” he added. Any women who have had a similar experience and who have not reported it to gardaí are being asked to do so.
Anyone with information should contact Galway Garda Station at (091 ) 538000.
