Council to establish full-time grounds staff for city parks

The Galway City Council is to establish a full-time permanent grounds staff unit for Galway City's three main parks - Terryland Forest Park, Merlin Woods and Cappagh Park.

The move has been welcomed by Joe Loughnane, People Before Profit candidate for Galway City Central. "These spaces are invaluable to Galway's biodiversity, can help us tackle climate change, and improve the health and education of Galway's population," he said.

While volunteers who tidy and maintain our public green spaces are to be fully commended, Mr Loughnane said it was appropriate the city council should employ staff to carry out this work. "The benefits of this are two-fold," he said. "The parks benefit from having full-time, dedicated, attention and the council provides employment for the workers."
