Connemara walking festival offers insight into Leenane

The Connemara Mountain Walking Festival, which takes place May 3 to 5, celebrates its 11th anniversary with a series of exhilarating walks and talks.

The festival has become a major event on the calendar for Connemara and the wider region, and organisers say this year's event will offer an unrivalled insight into the history of Leenane.

"The walks will tell the story of the area through the local people who offer unique, authentic insights into the land and its undiscovered cultural and historical gems," they say.

Set within the rugged beauty of Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way, visitors will enjoy access to parts of the local area not normally open to the public.

Local landowners and farmers will share their knowledge of the folklore and traditions treasured dearly by Leenane and the people who are proud to call this part of the west of Ireland home.

The festival has been designed to suit all levels of walkers. from casual low-level walkers to the more experienced. Mountain trained, certified guides will host the wide range of walks each day.

Taking place across the May Bank Holiday weekend, organisers say the festival promises to "entertain, educate and inspire with a fantastic combination of enthralling talks, wonderful walks and lively céilís with incredible music sure to get toes tapping".
