Music for Good Friday

Resurgam and Collegium chamber choirs, The English Cornett, and Sackbut Ensemble in St Nicholas' Collegiate Church

THE ANNUAL concert of sacred music for Good Friday returns to St Nicholas’ Collegiate Church, with a performance of Heinrich Schütz’s setting of the last words of Christ on the cross: Die Sieben Worte Jesu Christi Am Kreuz.

The concert, entitled Music for Good Friday - Last Words, will see Schütz’s piece performed by the Resurgam chamber choir, the Collegium chamber choir, and The English Cornett and Sackbut Ensemble. The conductor is Mark Duley. There will also be settings of other texts, both in German and Latin, associated with Christ's final utterances: the canticle Nunc Dimittis and the funeral psalm De Profundis, in versions by Schein, Lassus, Palestrina, Praetorius, and Schütz again.

The concert takes place on Friday April 19 at 5pm. Tickets are €20/18/16/6 from Music For Galway (www.musicforgalway.ie, 091 - 705962 ), or O’Maille’s Original House of Style, High Street.

Resurgam will also be touring Schütz’s Die Sieben Worte Jesu Christi Am Kreuz throughout April. As well as the St Nicholas' concert, Resurgam will also breing the piece to St Joseph’s Church on Thursday April 18 at 1pm. Tickets are €10 at the door.
