A young man (19 ) who was left savagely beaten after a brutal attack on Dominick street will have to eat through a straw for the next month.
The man, who spoke to Galway First following the attack, also claims that no Garda support arrived following the assault despite several calls.
The man, who wishes not to be named, suffered a broken jaw in the unprovoked attack and subsequently underwent surgery last Tuesday to have permanent metal pins placed in his jaw.
He said that he and a group of friends who had been drinking in a pub in the area and had gone to buy a takeaway on Dominick Street when the attack took place.
He described how two men from a group of around seven then approached them aggressively, and he and his friend were attacked, with him sustaining a broken jaw and a his friend a broken nose.
Staff from the Kebab House then came outside to break up the fight, and after a threat to call the Gardaí the attackers dispersed.
The young man then decided to wait for the squad car to arrive while his friends left to bring the man with a broken nose to casualty.
But after waiting for 20 minutes the man walked to Mill Street Garda Station to make a complaint and ask where the squad car was.
He said, “I walked to Mill Street to report the incident, I couldn’t speak very clearly and was very shaken up about the whole thing, so I think the woman behind the desk thought I was drunk, she seemed annoyed and told me to return to Dominick Street and wait for the squad car”.
No car ever arrived, and he was then taken to hospital by friends where he had two pins placed in his jaw.
Mill Street Garda Station have issued a statement saying an investigation into the case is now underway and CCTV footage is being examined.
The young man said that though he is happy the matter is being investigated.
