Green candidate demands more bus shelters

People waiting for buses at stops with no shelter are undergoing a “cruel punishment”, with the lack of bus shelters in the city “discouraging” use of public transport.

This is the view of the Green’s Galway City Central candidate, Martina O’Connor, the latest Local Election candidate to join calls for more bus shelters in the city. She pointed out that a number of busy routes have no shelter, and that bus services are used mainly by schoolchildren, college students, city workers, young families and elderly.

“Maximum uptake of public transport rather than car use is to be encouraged but it requires investment in the basic infrastructure of shelter,” she said. “The cost of these is minimal in comparison to other congestion relieving proposals.”
