Council to vote on sports funding at the end of the month

A decision on which major sports infrastructure projects the Galway City Council will put forward for Government funding has been deferred until a later date.

At Monday’s ordinary meeting at City Hall, councillors agreed to hold a special meeting on March 25 to finalise an application for a large scale sport infrastructure fund from the Department of Transport, Tourism, and Sport.

Councillors are considering four projects which include Connacht Rugby’s plan for a stadium upgrade, as well as a world class swimming facility at Cappagh Park.

The decision to defer the vote was taken in order to allow extra time for the Galway City Council chief executive, Brendan McGrath, to obtain more information on application criteria for the fund.
