Joseph Quilty's love of the Burren

Retrospective exhibition at The Kenny Gallery will feature work from the artist's Galway period

THE ENVIRONMENTALIST, artist, and illustrator Gordon D'Arcy will officially open a new, albeit retrospective, exhibition, of the art of Joseph Quilty, a unique self-taught painter who died in 1995.

Joseph Quilty – Experimental Burren, opens tomorrow [Friday March 8] at 6pm in The Kenny Gallery, Liosbán Retail Park. This will also serve to officially launch www.josephquilty.com, a showcase of the wide variety of styles Quilty used over his lifetime, especially from the 17 years he lived and painted in Doorus, Kinvara.

.

"Although his true loves were the Burren and oils, Dad was always trying different styles, subjects, colour palettes and compositions," says his son Michael Quilty. "That’s why we’ve called this show Experimental Burren. In many of his paintings, Dad worked closely with composition and form but he also liked to experiment, giving free rein to the senses, his imagination and the flow of the brush or palette knife. What you see in this exhibition is a window into that creative journey."

Joseph Quilty was born in 1914 in Limerick. He later lived in London and Dublin, and in 1978 settled in Kinvara. The exhibition runs Mondays to Saturdays, from 9am to 5pm, until Thursday April 4. See www.josephquilty.com
