MUSIC FROM the unfairly overlooked Slovakian composer Ján Levoslav Bella will be performed by the ConTempo Quartet at the next From Europe With Love lunchtime concert.
From Europe With Love is a concert series exploring the string quartet repertoire from each of its 27 EU member countries. The concert takes place in St Nicholas' Collegiate Church on Tuesday March 5 from 1.10pm to 1.50pm, with ConTempo performing Bella’s String Quartet No 3 in Cm.
.
Though largely forgotten today, Bella [pictured above] was a well-respected composer and conductor in his day, and was admired by Antonín Dvorák and Johannes Brahms. He was inspired by romantic music from the likes of Schumann, Wagner, and Smetana. At the time of its publication, the String Quartet No 3 was championed by the famous Bohemian String Quartet who toured it throughout Europe, establishing some fame for the work and its composer up until the First World War.
The concert will be introduced by Igor Pokojný, ambassador and plenipotentiary of the Slovak Republic to Ireland. Admission is free but early arrival is recommended. See www.thegalwaymusicresidency.ie
