Donoghue’s newcomers help Galway to easy league win

Galway can be expected to bag a second National Hurling League win when they head to Netwatch Cullen Park to take on Carlow on Sunday (2pm ).

Having kickstarted their campaign with a 1-27 to 2-15 win over Laois at Pearse Stadium, manager Micheal Donoghue is expected to use the Carlow outing as another chance to look at squad newcomers.

Carlow went down to Dublin last weekend by 3-15 to 0-18, but they were made to work for it after Marty Kavanagh ensured Colm Bonners' side enjoyed a half-time lead, scoring eight points.

Galway, meanwhile, led Laois 1-15 to 0-7 at the interval, with Joe Canning and Cathal Mannion dominating the visitors.

Although Galway boasted just four who played in the All-Ireland final, they were far too strong for Laois despite the best efforts of PJ Scully.

Mannion, in midfield, brother Padraic in the backs, and Canning, were key figures for the Tribesmen, while Davey Glennon scored the Galway goal after 25 minutes.

Their dominance was reflected with 10 starting players getting on the scoreboard, which helped Galway lead by 1-24 to 0-9 with 10 minutes remaining.

Laois staged a late rally, but it was never going to be enough to rattle Donoghue's side.
