The monthly meeting at County Hall was adjourned for five minutes on Monday as a mark of respect to the late Mark Killilea.
The former East Galway TD and MEP, passed away on New Year’s Eve aged 79. Cllr Mary Hoade said the popular Tuam based politician served with great distinction.
Cllr Hoade said; “[Mark Killilea] Served as a cathaoirleach, in the Dáil and Seánad. He was a huge influence on the lives of many people, including in north Galway and at European level.
“He maintained a clear image of where he came from.The crowds of people clearly indicated the respect in which he was held.”
Connemara area councillor Séamus Walsh said there was huge respect and admiration for Mark Killilea in his area.
Cllr Walsh said; “In the years we dealt with him, I never heard a negative comment. When people heard his name a smile came to their face. He did so much for the small farming community. He was held with great affection in my area, something which I have not seen and was known as ‘Markín’.”
Loughrea area councillor Michael Fahy described Mr Killilea as “an outstanding politican”.
Cllr Fahy said; “I had the honour to serve with Mark. He was instrumental to getting the single farming payment instituted. As a politician and statesman, he was a proper gentleman. I believe one of the roundabouts in Tuam should be named after him.”
Mr Killiea is survived by his wife and family, including his son Donagh Killilea who sits on the Galway County Council.
