A FILM exploring the lyrics of Ballygar composer and bandmaster, PS Gilmore, and the town itself, will be screened in Ballygar Courthouse this weekend.
News From Home will be screened on Saturday [January 19] at 7pm. The film has been made by Galway artist Louise Manifold, and it seeks to explore Ballygar, its architecture, and the surrounding area. It looks at local architectural follies, the solid stone round tower, the demolished market house that was originally in the square, and construction for the town’s pavilion.
Louise also worked with Sheila Flanagan of ArtFarm residency space; Thomas Kenny, Ballygar Tidy Towns; and 12 young people from Youthwork Ireland Midland group, who created a short chorus piece for News From Home, playing drums and other percussion instruments.
The screening is part of the Government's Creative Ireland Programme for County Galway, and is in partnership with Mairin Doddy, the Galway County Council architectural conservation officer.
“Knowing your own place leads to a deeper appreciation of how it has developed over time and can help shape how it advances into the future," said Ms Doddy. "This is a very interesting collaboration between artists and communities which we hope fosters and interest in the past, present and future architectural features in our county."
