Bridge Mills Galway Language Centre sponsors young adults returning to education in Kenya

Bridge Mills Galway Language Centre, a Department of Education recognised training institute, now in its 32nd year of business, is a quality school with Cambridge Exams Centre recognition, EAQUALS, Quality English, ACELS/QQI, and FETAC accreditation.

This year the school’s sponsorship aims to support 30 young adults in north Kenya, who have had to drop out of school as a result of poverty, pregnancy, early marriage, etc, to return to education. The programme involves those selected taking part in a nine-month, accelerated learning course covering the Kenyan primary curriculum for grades six to eight, ultimately sitting for the Kenyan Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE ) in November 2019.

Turkana county is an isolated arid and semi-arid land (ASAL ) region in northern Kenya that borders Uganda, Ethiopia, and South Sudan. Almost the size of Ireland, it is populated by approximately a million Turkana, a traditionally nomadic tribe for whom pastoralism (raising of livestock including camels, goats, and cattle ) is the dominant livelihood.

Specific course objectives include:

To cover the Kenyan primary curriculum up to grade 8 to prepare students to sit and pass the KCPE.

To support the development of life skills in participants by ensuring regular attendance, participation in class and group work, and completion of assignments.

To build the personal confidence and self-esteem of participants to act as leaders in the community and advocates for the importance of education.

‘We are delighted to be involved in this education programme and to be involved in inter-country education sponsorship in 2019,” said school director Patrick Creed.

Full and part time TEFL CELT courses start at Galway Language Centre this month, providing training in Teaching English as a Foreign Language with many job opportunities in Ireland and abroad. The school’s popular foreign language programme returns for evening classes on January 21.
