O’Flaherty secures funding for new Renmore playground

A new playground for children in Renmore has taken a step closer to reality, with funding for the project having reached €70,000, following an allocation of €38,000 in next year’s Galway City Council budget.

The allocation has been welcomed by Independent Galway City East councillor, Terry O’Flaherty, who has campaigned for this facility. An initial allocation of €20,000 was set aside for the playground. However, last year she encouraged City Hall to apply to the Department of Children Capital Grant Scheme for Play and Recreation, after which €12,000 was secured for Renmore Neighbourhood Park. Further representations saw €20,000 included in the 2018 budget, while at the discussion for next year’s council budget, another €18,000 was set aside, bringing the total to €70,000.

“The funding secured will finally help to get moving on a badly needed facility,” said Cllr O’Flaherty. “It’s vital we get it off the ground as soon as possible, and I will be pressing the council to move forward on it without delay. It will serve a huge area populated by a great number of young children, including two junior schools, who have no playground at the moment, apart from a small toddlers’ facility in Lakeshore Drive.”
