Pálás Cinema wins award at Amsterdam World Architecture Festival

'It is great for Galway to have this acknowledgement of its magic lantern'

Galway's Pálás Cinema has been awarded the Use of Colour Prize at the World Architecture Awards which were held recently in Amsterdam.

The award was presented to Tom dePaor, the designer of the Pálás Cinema. The building is illuminated during the day by elegant painted glass windows, which can bring illumination and colour to the street outside at night. Judges lauded the project as a “beautiful building [which] reveals itself like a magic lantern”, adding that the “colour is completely integrated and critical to the conceptual design and experience of the building.”

.

"I am pleased that the building has won this award from such an international field in such a prestigious festival," said Mr dePaor. "It is great for Galway to have this acknowledgement of its magic lantern."

Founding member of the Solas board, Lelia Doolan, a driving force behind the creation of the cinema said: "This a very happy moment — to have Tom dePaor’s beautiful work recognised by an international jury of architects. They were captivated by his integration of light and colour in the building, and especially by the designs for the glorious windows, based on Pat Scott’s work and created by Tom and by Pat’s partner, Eric Pearce."
