How to avoid chimney fires

It is wet, windy, and cold and all we want to do when we get home from school and work is to snuggle up in front of the toasty glow of the fire. But it is important to remember that having not been in use since the early days of spring, it is possible the chimney will be clogged with branches, leaves, and other objects to go along with the soot, tar, and ash.

Here at advertiser.ie we provide you with some tips on how to prevent chimney fires.

1. Get the chimney cleaned

The most obvious way to prevent the chimney going on fire is by getting it cleaned. The stereotypical image of a chimney fire is one which is quite spectacular with loud cracking and popping noises and plenty of dense smoke. However, chimney fires can burn slowly and not be visible. They can reach high temperatures and can seep into the walls and ignite anything flammable. The flames can spread very quickly onto roofs causing huge devastation or total destruction to your home.

The primary cause of a chimney fire is a dirty chimney. Soot, tar, and ash build up every time you put on a fire. This mixture, called creosote, is highly combustible and it only takes a small amount to start a fire. Remember get a professional chimney cleaner to do the job.

2. Use dry wood

Another obvious point but if the wood that is being used is wet, it will not burn as hot as dry wood. Burning wet wood leads to a substance called creosote building up faster in the chimney and this can catch on fire.

3. How to start a fire

Always use newspapers or kindling to start a fire. Never use petrol, cardboard boxes, wrapping paper, or your Christmas tree.

So there you have it. Make sure to avoid a chimney fire this winter.
