€6.31 million allocated for Galway city projects

Martin Roundabout, cycling infrastructure, Nuns Island, docks, and Sandy Road set to benefit

The Martin Roundabout on the old Dublin Road, and cycling and pedestrian infrastructure on the east side of the city, are set to benefit from funding of €6.31 million, which was announced this morning.

The funding, from the first round of the Urban Regeneration and Development Fund, includes €2.7 million for the upgrade of the Martin Roundabout, near the Galway Clinic, which will facilitate both the introduction of a signalised junction and access routes for the planned new urban town, Ardaun, in the area.

There is also €2.9 million to enable a variety of improvements to infrastructure for cyclists and pedestrians with an initial focus on the east side of the city and from Oranmore towards the city. A further €708,000 will go towards the development of plans to guide the regeneration of core city centre areas including Nuns Island, the inner city harbour area, and Sandy Road.

The funding to design initial plans for these areas is to assist the Galway City Council, and Government departments, determine how best to encourage the most sustainable uses of the land.

Welcoming the funding, Seán Kyne, Government Chief Whip, Aire don Ghaeilge, don Ghaeltacht agus do na hOileáin, and Fine Gael TD for Galway West, said: “I look forward to progression of these projects which will help make our city more sustainable and liveable for communities today and for the population growth that is envisaged for Galway. Further rounds of funding will follow next year beginning in February.”
