The Spanish Arch will be lit in red tomorrow evening [Friday November 23] as part of a nation-wide series of events to ‘Show Racism the Red Card’, and the Galway Anti Racism Network is calling on the public to attend the event.
The Spanish Arch will join Liberty Hall and the Mansion House in Dublin in being lit in red. Friday 23 is also Wear Red Day, which similarly seeks to highlight racism and discrimination.
The arch, and the adjoining Comerford House, will be lit in red by Cue One Ireland and Pearse Doherty, head of production at Galway 2020. Marc Jennings from Up In The Éire will take an aerial photo of the illumination. According to Joe Loughnane of the Galway Anti Racism Network: “When everyone is gathered to watch the illumination, people will hold up large red cards to form the shape of one huge red card from up above.”
“This is about taking a stand against discrimination and inequality,” Mr Loughnane said, “to show Galway embraces its title as the most multicultural city in the country, to prove community groups are central to our current Capital of Culture status, and we can put on amazing displays of creativity for a good cause.”
The event is co-hosted by GARN, Galway Sports Partnership, Show Racism the Red Card and Galway 2020. It is sponsored by Cue One Ireland and supported by Galway United.
