Some 400 households in the Lurgan Park-Gleann Rua area of Renmore are being denied a bus service as a speed ramp in Murrough Avenue is preventing buses from getting into the estate.
This is the view of Fianna Fáil councillor Mary Leahy who has written to officials in the Galway City Council calling for the speed ramp to be “modernised immediately to facilitate a bus service”.
Cllr Leahy said she has received many complaints from residents from the area regarding the lack of a bus service. She said Bus Éireann is “eager” to provide such a service, but the ramp is causing problems.
“Bus services are provided to other areas of the city where ramps are located but that such ramps are of a modern design,” she said.
Cllr Leahy believes this is an ideal time to facilitate a bus service in this area of Renmore.
“Bus Éireann have advanced plans to introduce a new ‘radial’ service,” she said, “whereby a designated bus will be assigned to a route on one side of the city only, and will not travel across the city thereby eliminating unnecessary delays.”
These plans will see the Renmore bus route change. Buses will enter Renmore at Duggans and return back into the city making use of the inbound Dublin Road bus lane.
Cllr Leahy feels that her suggestion to modernise the Murrough Avenue speed ramp will allow a bus service to Lurgan Park, which will permit the bus to exit at the Corrib Great Southern Roundabout and access the Dublin Road bus lane.
