The Galway County Council must consult with health and safety experts to assess the potential risk to the public of a 200 megawatt power plant proposed for Cashla, Athenry.
This is the view of Galway West TD Noel Grealish who believes the proposed gas powered plant is “totally unsuitable” for Cashla because of the large population in the area and its proximity to schools in Lisheenkyle, Carnmore, and Cregmore.
As a result, Dep Grealish has called on both the planning and environment sections of the county council to consult with the HSE, the Environmental Protection Agency, and the Health & Safety Authority before making a decision on the application.
“There are many potential risks to public health, the environment, and livestock from a gas powered plant,” he said. “I want to ensure all of these factors are fully explored before the county council make its decision.”
