Events to remember Armistice Day

Events are to be held locally this week to mark the centenary of Armistic Day.

Local historian William Henry will give a lecture which looks at the impact of the Great War on Galway, city and county, and how the end of the war was reported and marked locally.

The lecture will; be held at 8pm tonight Thursday November 8 at the Old Galway Society in the Victoria Hotel.

A special commemoration and wreath laying ceremony will also be taking place in St Nicholas Collegiate Church during 11.00 Mass on Sunday 11 November 2018. This will mark the Centenary Anniversary of the Armistice.

Mr Henry is compiling a photograph and information-details file of soldiers and sailors who served in the Great War 1914-1914. It is ongoing and will form part of a project that will include the already list of the 1,200 servicemen killed in the war which was compiled by William Henry and Jacquiline O’Brien in 2006 for Forgotten Heroes.

There are also plans for a permanent momerial to be erected in memory of all the fallen from Galway. The Galway Great War Commemoration Committee members include Jim Larkin, Helen Bermingham, Grainne Kelly, Catherine Gagneux, Andrew Turkiewicz, Niall McNelis, John Kinneen, and William Henry.
