An advanced traffic light system and a reduced speed limit along the entire length of the Monument Road in Menlo is necessary to solve the area’s ongoing traffic problems.
This is the view of Independent Councillor Terry O’Flaherty, who has called on the Galway City Council to put in place traffic calming measures in the area.
Her call followed a meeting she held with residents from the Monument Road and city council engineers, and further contact with Garda Supt Tom Curley.
At the meeting a temporary ban on all vehicles except school buses turning right from the Headford roundabout at the Ballindooley Cross on to the Monument Road, particularly between the hours of 8am and 9.30am, was proposed.
However Supt Tom Curley said this was not an enforceable solution. As there are three alternative access points to Monument Road a ‘No Right Turn’ restriction would also be required at these turns or the rat run will continue.
He pointed out that residents seeking access to their homes could argue that the restriction doesn’t apply to them, leading to confrontation and complaints. He also said that drivers could attempt to turn back on the N84 and approach the junction from the Galway side, which could lead to a greater traffic hazard.
Supt Curley said the only long term solution to the problem is an advanced traffic light system. He also said reducing the speed limit to 50kph on the entire length of the road, coupled with appropriate traffic calming measures would enhance safety and be more amenable to effective policing.
