NUI Galway Students’ Union to hold road safety day next week

NUI Galway Students’ Union is holding a road safety day on Wednesday October 31, where the Road Safety Authority interactive shuttle and roll-over simulator will be outside Áras na Mac Léinn from 10am to 4pm.

The interactive shuttle allows participants to practice their driving and hazard perception skills on car, motorbike, and bicycle simulators. The roll-over simulator will demonstrate how it would feel if you were in a car which turned over in a collision. Visitors can also practice the driver theory test and see how driving environments and speed affect braking distances on the brake reaction timer. The Students’ Union will also be distributing free high vis items and bike lights throughout the day.

“Of the 157 fatalities on Irish roads in 2017, 33 were among those aged 16-25,” says NUI Galway Students’ Union president Megan Reilly. “The Road Safety shuttle is a great educational resource to spread the road safety message to young people. In 2017, one in five of the drivers and passengers killed were not wearing a seatbelt. The roll-over simulator’ demonstrates how it would feel if you were in a car which turned over in a collision, and the lifesaving benefits of wearing a seatbelt should this occur.”

The SU Road Safety Day is in conjunction with the Road Safety Authority. Admission is free and open to all.
