Celebrating Siobhán McKenna and An Taibhdhearc's archive

An evening with Lelia Doolan, Rita Connolly, Johnny Óg Connolly, Lillis Ó Laoire, and Ciarán Ó hÓgartaigh

A CELEBRATION of the life and work of the much respected Galway actor Siobhán McKenna, will take place in An Taibhdhearc next week as part of the national Irish language theatre's Taibhdhearc@90 events.

Cartlann, Ceol, Cuimhní... takes place in the theatre on Middle Street, on Wednesday November 7, and will see Lelia Doolan present the life and legacy of her friend Siobhán McKenna (1923 – 1986 ). There will also be Rita Connolly, who recently performed in Croke Park during the papal visit, singing the songs of Shaun Davey, accompanied by a small band.

The evening will also début ‘An Spéirbhean Ríonda’ a piece specially composed for this occasion and in memory of Siobhán McKenna, performed by the composer Johnny Óg Connolly. The show will be presented by Lillis Ó Laoire, and introduced by Ciarán Ó hÓgartaigh, uachtarán of NUI Galway.

The show is a collaboration between NUIG's Arts in Action and An Taibhdhearc, and it will also celebrate the An Taibhdhearc archive which is housed in the university's James Hardiman Library. "I am honoured to collaborate with my colleagues at the James Hardiman Library and the board of An Taibhdhearc, to celebrate Taibhdhearc@90," said Arts in Action producer/director Mary McPartlan, "and create these two exciting events for their diverse and historic programme."
