Cannon calls on Church to engage with Tuam survivors

An East Galway TD is calling on the Bons Secours Order and the archdiocese of Tuam to actively engage with those affected by issues relating to the former Mothers and Baby Home at Tuam.

Minister for the Diaspora and International Development Ciaran Cannon has said that the both the Order and the archdiocese should take every opportunity to help bring healing to the survivors and all those affected.

Minister Cannon said that while there is some distance to yet go before the forensic excavation approved by the Government begins at the former Mothers and Baby Home at Tuam, this situation is still deeply painful for the survivors and all those connected to this site.

“I note too from a radio interview with Catherine Corless, that there has been no formal engagement with the issue from the archdiocese of Tuam.”

“While the forensic excavation and subsequent analysis will lead to greater truth surrounding this issue and, vitally, a dignified and respectful burial for the children interred at this site, it is also a crucial opportunity to being healing to the survivors and all affected.”

Minister Cannon said that the tenderness to which every child is entitled to in this life was denied to these children and every parent will shudder with revulsion when they reflect on the existence of institutions such as those like the former Mothers and Baby Home in Tuam.

“While the forensic excavation and reburial will accord these children the full dignity they deserve, there is an opportunity now to bring real healing to the survivors and all affected and I would hope that both the Bons Secours Order and the local church will take that opportunity,” he said.
