Double the joy for Maree

This weekend Maree's two national league sides will be hoping to maintain their winning momentum.

In a cup double-header in Calasanctius College in Oranmore, the women take on Phoenix Rockets from Dublin at 5pm in the Division one cup; while the men face Griffith College Swords Thunder at 8pm on the Pat Duffy Cup.

Maree had double the reasons to celebrate last weekend when both sides recorded wins.

The men’s Superleague side ended their wait for a first win of the season when turning over UCC Demons 90-86 in the Mardyke Arena on Sunday afternoon, while the previous day, the women’s Division one side made it three wins from three with a dominant 80-50 win over St Mary’s Castleisland from Kerry in Oranmore.

The men were helped on their way to victory in an end-to-end thriller by the contribution of their American signing, Sean Sellers, who hit 33 points, including nine of 12 3-point attempts, while there were also big scoring contributions from Niels Bunschoten (25 ) and Eoin Rockall (13 ).

Maree led 46-44 at the break, and despite Kyle Hosford hitting 38 points for the home side - a week after his 23-point second-half contribution helped inflict defeat on Moycullen - Maree held their nerve to finally get their first win of the season after four attempts.

Maree: Sean Sellers (33 ), Niels Bunschoten (25 ), Eoin Rockall (13 ), Paul Freeman (4 ), John Burke (4 ), Kenneth Hansberry (9 ), Stephen Commins, Charlie Crowley (2 ), Toms Fabricus, Enda Walsh, Ciaran Harte, Ciaran Blayney.

It is a different story for the women’s side, who continue to lead the Division one Southern Conference after a 30-point win in a game they never trailed.

Claire Rockall once again dominated the boards, hitting 20 points and claiming 10 rebounds, while Dayna Finn (16 ) and Alison Blayney (10 ) also scored well for the home side, who are now just one of three sides left unbeaten in Division one after three rounds of games.

Maree: Claire Rockall (20 ), Dayna Finn (16 ), Carol McCarthy (4 ), Maggie Byrne (8 ), Fiona Scally (8 ), Alison Blayney (10 ), Catherine Connaire (4 ), Laoise Walsh (6 ), Nicola O’Connell, Clodagh McGrail (3 ), Sacra Mannion, Colleen McInerney.
