"DOUBLE, DOUBLE toil and trouble; Fire burn and caldron bubble" said the witches in MacBeth, and there will be much witching activity in the Pálás Cinema with its Season Of The Witch films for Halloween.
The season which will range from family friendly favourites to gory cult classics begins with The Witches of Eastwick, starring Susan Sarandon, Cher, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Jack Nicholson (Tuesday October 23, 6.30pm ). George Miller’s adaptation of John Updike’s novel is full of fun and serious 1980’s hair with Nicholson having a blast.
Suspiria (1977 ), Dario Argento’s lusciously filmed horror classic, is on Thursday October 25 at 9pm. It is set in a dance school that may also be home of a coven of witches. This new restoration is an absolute must for the big screen.
The Blair Witch Project (Friday 26, 10.30pm ) created such hype and controversy upon its initial release it was somewhat dismissed as a gimmick, but in retrospect, is a masterfully made horror film, creating sickening tension and culminating in an unforgettable climax.
The Wizard Of Oz (Sunday 28, 3pm ) features perhaps the greatest witch of them all in Margaret Hamilton, terrifying as Judy Garland’s nemesis the Wicked Witch of the West in this fantasy classic for all the family to experience on the big screen.
Other witching films to enjoy are Hocus Pocus (Saturday 27, 3pm ), The Witch (Sunday 28, 10.30pm ), The Witches (Monday 29, 4pm ), Practical Magic (Monday 29, 6.15pm ), The Love Witch (Monday 29, 8.30pm ). Tickets are on sale via palas.ie
