Galway students are being encouraged to apply for the Labour Party's Richard O'Carroll Empowerment Bursary, especially as the deadline for applications is tomorrow. The successful applicant will receive €2,000 in the first term of the 2018-2019 academic year.
The Mayor of Galway, Niall McNelis, and his fellow Labour councillor Billy Cameron, are urging students to apply. Applicants must have attended a Deis school; have completed the Leaving Cert within the past three years; be currently in further or higher education; and must submit the application form before 5pm tomorrow [Friday October 5]. The successful applicant will be selected by a subcommittee of the Labour Party 1916 Centenary Commemoration Committee. The successful applicant will be notified before Friday October 26.
"Labour created this bursary to commemorate the life and legacy of Cllr Richard O’Carroll, who was killed in the 1916 Rising, by assisting young people in continuing their education," said Mayor McNelis. "Throughout his activist years, O’Carroll believed passionately in empowering young people through education. We hope this bursary will do just that, and I strongly urge local students to apply."
