The Over The Edge Fiction Slam is back

Fiction writers have a chance to read their work in public...and you could win a bottle of wine

POETRY SLAMS are common and there are always opportunities for poets to read their work aloud. Not so for fiction writers, which is why the annual Over The Edge Fiction Slam is such a welcome event.

The first 12 fiction writers to make it to The Kitchen at the Galway City Museum on Friday October 12 before 8pm, and register, will be guaranteed a place in the slam. Early arrival is advised. Participating writers should bring two pieces of their own fiction, as there are two rounds. Time limit in both rounds is five minutes. Extracts from longer stories are admissible. Stories do not have to be memorised. The Fiction Slam will be judged by a jury of two audience members and writer Rebecca O’Connor. Three writers will go through to the second round. The prize is a bottle of red wine.

Rebecca O’Connor will also read at the event. Her first collection of poetry We’ll Sing Blackbird, was shortlisted for the Shine/Strong Award, and her writing has appeared in The Guardian, The Spectator, and Poetry Review. Her debut novel, He Is Mine and I Have No Other, was described as “powerful and searing" by The Sunday Times.
