GINA YASHERE is best known as the British correspondent, explaining all things Brexit, on Comedy Central’s The Daily Show with Trevor Noah, and next month, she comes to the Vodafone Comedy Carnival Galway.
Originally from Britain, Gina sold everything she owned and took a huge gamble moving to the US. Yet, within a couple of months she became the first British comedian to appear on Def Comedy Jam, the major HBO series which launched the careers of Chris Tucker and Dave Chappelle. She also made regular appearances on The Tonight Show.
Thanks to her bombastic delivery, infectious personality, and cheeky observations, she is now a genuine US primetime star and after a decade in the business, is close to becoming a household name. While she had been selling out the Brixton Academy and Hammersmith Apollo, and appearing on The Lenny Henry Show, prior to her US re-location, as she told The Guardian: “If I’d sat in England waiting for someone to give me a TV show, I’d still be there, being the token black face on Mock The Week.” While she acknowledges there is still a glass ceiling for black comics in America, “at least when you hit it in America, you’re a multimillionaire, so it’s not so painful”.
Gina plays the following mixed bill shows at Vodafone Comedy Carnival: Róisín Dubh, Wednesday October 24; Black Box Theatre, Thursday 25; Magic Mirrors Spiegeltent, Friday 26. Tickets and more information are via www.vodafonecomedycarnival.com and OMG@Zhivago, Shop Street.
