Home Instead Galway hosts free dementia workshops in the community

Home Instead Senior Care Galway and local libraries are hosting a series of free Dementia Workshops this September, which is World Alzheimer’s Month.

About 55,000 people in Ireland are currently living with some form of dementia, and that figure is expected to increase dramatically in the years ahead. The workshops, which take place in Galway City, Tuam, Athenry, Loughrea, and Ballybane, aim to educate local families about the disease and share Home Instead’s expertise in dementia care.

“Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias have become a critical issue for health care professionals in Galway, not to mention the families and family carers who are impacted,” says Suzanne Ryan, General Manager at Home Instead Senior Care Galway.

“By hosting these workshops, we hope to ensure that local families have a greater understanding of the causes behind the disease, how it affects their loved ones and what can be done to provide the highest possible levels of care to those who suffer from it.

“Many of the older people we care for have dementia, so we’ve witnessed firsthand the distress and loss that older adults can face. Family members often play a large part in providing care for relatives with dementia and we want to support them in this crucial work by providing them with expert advice and tips on how to deal with the challenges they face,” Ms Ryan added.

Home Instead Galway’s workshops run at various times from Tuesday September 25 to Thursday September 27 at Westside Library, Galway City Library, Tuam Library, Athenry Library, Loughrea Library and Ballybanne Library.

Anyone in the local area who has an interest in learning more about dementia should call 091 384 160 or visit https://www.homeinstead.ie/Alzheimers-Dementia-care to register.

World Alzheimer’s Month aims to raise awareness and challenge the stigma that surrounds dementia, as the number of people affected by the disease grows annually. World Alzheimer’s Day takes place on September 21. Further information is available at HomeInstead.ie
