TWO SONATAS by Schubert, and Tchaikovsky's 'The Seasons', will be performed in Galway by one of the finest classical musicians to ever come from Ireland - Belfast pianist Barry Douglas.
Douglas will play Music For Galway's opening concert of its new season, entitled Wanderlust, in the Emily Anderson Concert Hall, NUI Galway, at 8pm on Wednesday September 26.
Wanderlust will explore the exchange of ideas and cross-fertilisation that travel brings to music, and celebrate the willingness of musicians to tour to show off their talents. With Tchaikovsky’s 'The Seasons' Douglas will take audiences on a journey through the year. Two Schubert sonatas follow: D 537 in Am, was the first piano sonata the composer, aged only 19, completed. The second sonata, the D 664 in A, is a gentle, sweet work, written when Schubert was in his early 20s.
Since winning the Gold Medal at the 1986 Tchaikovsky International Piano Competition in Moscow, Douglas has established a major international career. He has performed with the Endellion and Borodin quartets, and with the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra in Dublin, the Ulster Orchestra, and the London Symphony Orchestra. He is the artistic director of Camerata Ireland and the Clandeboye Festival. He has released numerous albums through the Chandos label.
