Portumna’s Shorelines Arts Festival returns next week

Readings, concerts, poetry, talks, workshops, and visual arts

PORTUMNA'S SHORELINES Arts Festival returns to the east Galway town from Thursday September 13 to Sunday 16, with concerts, film screenings, arts and crafts workshops, and readings.

Highlights of the festival, now in it's 11th year, include Folk On A Boat on Saturday 15, with words by Anne Marie Kennedy and music from the East Galway traditional musicians; and Sunday 16 with Lady Barbalade and Canadian writer, Lara Bozabalian. Both events are run by Shane Dolphin.

Another highlight should be The Dark Delightful Experience, a collaborative event taking place in The Engine Room. This audio performance of sound, music and theatre takes place in the dark where the audience will explore the space as it is filled with both live music and prerecorded sounds.

There will also be readings by authors EM Reapy (Red Dirt ), Margaret Hickey (Ireland’s Green Larder ), and Nuala O’Connor, who launches Becoming Belle, and readings from the poets James Harpur, Stephen James Smith, Martina Evans, Doireann Ní Ghríofa and John F Deane. Concerts to look forward to include The Irish Guitar Quartet; harpist, Michelle Mulcahy; and virtuoso young guitarist, Shane Hennessy.

Best-selling author and farmer, John Connell will be in conversation with local farming activist Maura Canning at Portumna Mart; Fergus Grant Stephenson will host a workshop where participants can make their own silver pendant; and the Shorelines Arts Exhibition will display work by Etain Hickey, Seamus MacFarlane, Vincent Devine, Kieran Tuohy, Elizabeth Petcu, Benny Williams, and local amateur artists.
