ITS ORIGINS lie in Portugal, its birthplace was Hawaii, and today the tiny guitar with four strings we call a ukulele is loved the world over, and as Galway is Ireland's festival city, why not have a ukulele festival?
Savage & Berry present Galway’s first ukulele festival, which takes place on Friday September 7, Saturday 8, and Sunday 9 and will features free events, competitions, live gigs, singalongs, comedy, flash mobs, and workshops for adults and children.
The festival opens with the Ukulele Ceilidh, a free event in Monroe's at 6pm on September 7. People are encouraged to bring their uke to have a jam with local groups and perform on stage. The Ukulele Flashmob will see ukulele players perform on Shop Street. A highlight will be the ‘Uke of The Year 2018’ competition, with artists and groups from across Ireland battling it out for the title.
There will be gigs on the Friday and Saturday from Minnie & the Illywhackers, Little John Nee, Big Jelly, and The Clandestinos, as well as musical comedy from ukulele sporting Irish Comedian of the Year 2016, Steve Bennett. Workshops are €10 apiece. For more information see www.wildwestukefest.com or email [email protected].
