HAS THE evil wizard Voldemort, arch enemy of Harry Potter, his own string quartet? It appears so, and these young musicians will be among the performers at the Galway Music Residency autumn/winter programme.
The programme sees the introduction of a new lunchtime series, From Europe with Love, which will explore the repertoire for string quartet from the 27 EU member countries. It takes place in St Nicholas’ Collegiate Church on the first Tuesday of every month, from September 2018 to June 2021, except January.
There will also be the world premiere of composer Greg Caffrey’s new piece for string quartet on November 23 at 8.30pm in The Mick Lally Theatre. It was commissioned by the GMR and the Galway City Council. It will feature as part of Music & Musings, GMR’s music and conversations with artists and composers series.
Buster Keaton’s The General (1927 ), a silent action-adventure-comedy depicting the true story of an escaped train during the American Civil War, will be screened in the O’Donoghue Centre for Drama, Theatre & Performance, NUI Galway on Tuesday October 30 at 7pm, accompanied by live music. This show is suitable for all ages.
For the Apprentice Ensemble scheme, ConTempo will work with its first ‘junior ensemble’ - The Voldemort Quartet. ConTempo will also be continuing its work with NUI Galway, engaging with the students of the MA in writing, the university orchestras, and the inaugural students of the new BA in music; continue its collaborations with the GMIT and secondary school students; mentor members of Sym-Phonic Waves, the new west of Ireland youth orchestra; and work with Galway book clubs exploring the links between literature and music.
