The Indian Cultural and Sports Community Galway will celebrate Indian Independence Day this Saturday, August 18, with a cultural event in the Salthill-Knocknacarra GAA Hall, Dr Mannix Road, from 2.30pm to 6.30pm.
India became independent from Britain in August 1947, and became a republic in 1950. Independence Day is celebrated annually, and the organisers of the Galway event note that it "commemorates the people who sacrificed their lives during the fight for independence and the spirit spread by Mahatma Gandhi of his great non-violence movement across the globe".
Saturday's event will see performances from children and adults, singing, games, and a prize ceremony. There will also be a food court with panipuri, chutneys, Indian chaat. Members of the Indian community in Galway will attend and all Galwegians are invited to join in the celebrations.
The event is organised by ICSC and they will be joined by Indian communities from Tuam, Loughrea, and Ennis, and Irish friends. For more information see [email protected], www.icscgalway.com, or see Facebook.
