DETROIT RAPPERS Slum Village have carried the torch for the old-school funk'n'soul hip-hop of genre pioneers like A Tribe Called Quest and De La Soul, enduring for almost 30 years, surviving changing tastes, and the departures and deaths of band members.
Slum Village - T3 and Young RJ - play Monroe’s on Thursday August 23 at 8pm. The group were founded in the early 1990s Baatin, T3, and producer J Dilla. They recorded a number of albums before peaking commercially in 2002 with Trinity (Past, Present and Future ) and the 2004 single 'Selfish', featuring Kanye West and John Legend.
However tragedy struck as J Dilla died in 2006 and Baatin in 2009. Slum Village became a duo in the 2010s comprising T3 and producer Young RJ. Villa Manifesto (E1 Records ) from 2010, featured posthumous appearances by both Dilla and Baatin, as well as guests DJ Babu, Posdnuos, Phife Dawg, Questlove, and others. Further albums followed, as did The Lost Scrolls, Vol 2 (Slum Village Edition ) in 2018, a compilation of unearthed early material by the original trio recorded in the late 1990s.
