Educate Together to hold public meeting on Galway's new secondary school

July 31 is the deadline for voting in Department of Education's online survey on patronage for the school

A public meeting to encourage parents to support Educate Together being the patron of the new second level school for the city, will take place in Ballybane Community Resource Centre next week.

The meeting will be held on Wednesday July 25 at 8pm, and is the latest in a series organised by the Galway Educate Together Second Level Startup group. It comes ahead of the July 31 deadline for parents to vote in the Department of Education's online survey to gauge the level of support for the various bodies competing for patronage.

The result will have a major bearing on the Education Minister, Richard Bruton's, final decision. Voting is open to parents of pupils who have recently completed first through fifth class - anticipated second-level entry of 2019 to 2023 - who live in the Galway city and Oranmore areas. A direct link to the survey is available at GET2LS.org/VOTE

The meeting will provide interested parents with information on what an Educate Together second-level school might look like, the Educate Togther model and ethos of education. Educate Together currently runs 13 secondary schools across the State, but as yet has none in Galway, although it is the patron of five primary schools in County Galway, with a total of 510 pupils.

"Students need a breadth of skills and attributes to succeed in today’s diverse world and changing workplace,” says Educate Together CEO Paul Rowe. "They need to be able to learn, unlearn, and relearn throughout their lives. Our second level schools aim to provide an education that will enable all students to contribute meaningfully to their communities, embrace the rights and responsibilities of citizenship in a democratic society, and develop the knowledge and skills necessary to live their lives and to build their careers in the 21st century.”
