The Galway City Council has agreed to support the the establishment of an annual Make Way Day taking place on September 26 2018.
The motion proposed by Fine Gael councillor Frank Fahy at City Hall on Monday evening will see the Galway City Council annually support and promote a local #MakewaydayGalwayCity campaign as part of the wider Make Way Day.
The campaign recognises that people with disabilities have the same right to use and enjoy public spaces, acknowledges the obstacles which people with disabilities face in their daily lives, including badly parked vehicles and bicycles, billboards, overgrown hedges and other ill-placed hazards, and understands that most obstacles are caused by thoughtlessness and genuine lack of awareness.
The Galway City Council will now write to Taoiseach Leo Varakar and to each individual minister and minister of state, calling on them to support, establish, fund, and resource an annual national Make Way Day which would be localised in each region.
