Galway Fringe Festival 2018

Eighth Fringe runs from July 15 to 30, with a programme of theatre, visual art, music, film, comedy and spoken word

THE EIGHTH Galway Fringe Festival runs from Sunday July 15 to Monday 30, with a programme boasting free and ticketed events across all art forms including theatre, visual art, music, film, comedy and spoken word.

Theatre highlights include Kisco Productions' Happyslapped (Kirwans Lane Theatre, Busker Brownes, July 15 to 19, 6pm ), a behind the scenes look at children's television shows, set in an anarchic world co-inhabited by humans and puppets. Eve O'Mahony presents The Bold Brigid Cleary, a one-woman play focusing on the infamous 1895 murder that shook Irish society (Kirwans Lane Theatre, Busker Brownes, July 22 to 26, 3.30pm ).

The Miller's Story [above], an adaptation of Chaucer's pilgrim classic, is a fun-filled romp featuring storytelling, song, silliness and clog dancing. See it in the Galway Mechanics Institute, Middle Street, July 19 to 21, 8pm ). A Tack Theatre's Jacqueline tackles the housing crisis (Kirwans Lane Theatre, Busker Brownes, July 15 to 17, 8.30pm ).

The life of Fenian John Devoy will be explored in From The Plains - The Story Of John Devoy (Galway Mechanics Institute, July 28 and 29, 7pm ). In this award-winning show, singer-songwriter Fia Rua (Eoghan Burke ) casts light on a compelling figure, through songs and music, humour and heartbreak. Also watch out for Martin Sharry's A Lonely Galway Bastard (Galway Mechanics Institute, July 21, 1pm ) and The Crooked Hook's A Tempest: A Play in One Act with a Play in Five Acts In It (July 26 to 28 ).

Music gigs at the festival include the Indie Label Showcase, organised by New Pope (David Boland ) which will take place at The Loft in Seven. The dates are Galway label Rusted Rail (July 20 ); Umbrella Records (July 21 ), DIY LK (July 27 ), and the Fringe Band Showcase with French Ketamine, 60 Watt Girl, and Echo Harte (July 28 ).

Also playing is dark folk/blues combo Rufus Coates & The Blackened Trees, whose album was voted the album of the week in The Irish Times (Galway Folk Club, De Burgo's, July 26, 9.30pm ); Buí, a collaborative music project featuring Belfast singer-songwriter Josh Healy, with Adam Sloan, Eoin Johnson, Rónán McQuillan, and Amy Nolan (Galway Folk Club, De Burgo's, July 17, 9.30pm ).

Comedy and spoken word events include Gerard Harris, presenting the award winning That's Enough Drama, about an anxious joke writer for a top British comedian (Galway Mechanics Institute, July 26 and 27, 8.30pm ); Connor McDonough-Flynn's new stand-up show Unhinged (Galway Mechanics Institute, July 19 to 21, 9pm ); while performance poet Paul McNamara presents Quarter Life Crisis (Galway Mechanics Institute, July 27 and 28, 6.30pm ), dealing with romance, career options, celebrity crushes, and video games.

Artists from Rijeka – Galway’s sister 2020 Capital of Culture – will display their works in Stamped: Letter From Rijeka in the Galway City Gallery, July 15 to 29; Katrina Trauma will explore humanity's estrangement from nature in the Galway City Gallery (July 15 to 29 ); And They Flew V, featuring works by students of artists Denise Hogan and Gill Christie is on show at the Renzo Café Gallery, Eyre Street.
