The Galway City Council, in partnership with Irish water, will upgrade the water infrastructure in Briarhill and Rosshill, Fianna Fáil city councillor Michael Crowe confirmed this week.
According to Cllr Crowe, for more than two years, households and businesses within the areas, have experienced "significant water problems", varying from regular outages to lack of pressure. During this time, Cllr Crowe has sought to have the mains water pipes servicing Coolough and Roshill replaced along with the mains pipe which runs along the Monivea Road.
"The weaknesses in the existing pipes on these routes are the primary reasons for the water difficulties," he said. "The existing pipes have been in place for decades and have not been fit for purpose for some time. I have had many meetings with Galway City Council to progress this. I have also had to liaise directly with Irish Water to keep this issue on their agenda. Thankfully, Irish Water have now announced the Galway City Water Conversation Project and the necessary works required in these areas are included in this.”
He said the "bundle of works" includes many areas across the city and will continue over the medium to long term until all areas are completed. Briarhill and Rosshill have been prioritised for this project and works have now commenced in these locations first. Works will take approximately seven weeks and works are restricted to off peak hours.
Cllr Crowe said the mains pipe for the Monivea Road has been "continuously bursting", causing the many outages over the last 12 months. "Many residents and members of the public have raised the condition of the surface along the Monivea Road," he said. "I can confirm this is only a temporary measure. I have also got a commitment from Galway City Council that once the works have been done, all the roads will be fully resurfaced and levelled."
