Think you have what it takes to put together a future blockbuster or a thought-provoking attention grabbing documentary? Well, your journey into the film business could have a kick-start by enrolling with the Huston School of Film and Digital Media.
Since its foundation in 2003, the school has grown into one of the leading providers of postgraduate courses in film, digital media, and related areas, and enrolment has begun for the 2009-2010 academic year. Graduates have gone on to considerable success, winning major national and international film awards.
A current Huston student on the MA in public advocacy and activism course, Stephen Stewart, recently picked up a Digital media award for his film Appeal to the people of Africa. Last year, two of our production/direction students travelled to Nigeria to shoot their award-winning film FGM - No Way Home, which looks at the controversial topic of female genital mutilation, while in 2008 production/direction student Brian Deane won the Babelgum Social/Environment Award at the Cannes Film Festival for his film Without Words. Three of the past four ‘Pitching Awards’ at the Galway Film Fleadh have been won by graduates of the Huston School’s MA in screenwriting programme.
One of the unique aspects of the school is the eclectic range of courses offered, taught by leading practitioners in their field. An unique aspect of the MA in film studies course in the coming year is the introduction of a new Irish-language module, offered in conjunction with Acadamh na hOllscolaíochta Gaeilge and Scoil na Gaeilge, OÉ Gaillimh, entitled ‘Scéalta Scáileáin na Gaeilge’. This module will focus on the development of representations of the Irish language in film and television and will provide a great opportunity for those interested in pursuing employment in the growing Irish language sector to acquire knowledge of developments in this area.
