A new Independent Donegal based candidate, Fiachra Ó Luain, has entered the race to win an EU seat for the three seat North West constituency in June’s European Elections.
Mr Ó Luain, a 27-year-old from Carndonagh, Co Donegal, is the latest entrant into the election race that includes Fianna Fáil MEP Sean Ó Neachtain, Fine Gael MEP Jim Higgins, Independent MEP Marian Harkin, Libertas founder Declan Ganley, and Sinn Féin Cllr Pádraig MacLochlainn.
Mr Ó Luain will be campaigning on education, the fishing industry, cross border initiatives, and green technology.
Mr Ó Luain believes there should be sustained investment in schools in the constituency and increased international exchange at third level. He wants to see Ireland base its future economy around Green energy. “Investment must be focused on the development of wave, tidal, wind, and solar technology,” he said.
The Donegal man also wants to see “swift reconstruction” of the Western Railway Corridor from Shannon Airport to Buncrana.
He is also calling for the renegotiation of the 1973 quotas for EU and domestic fishing to allow Irish fishing communities have more rights and higher quotas. “This must be coupled with at least a 10 year moratorium of EU fishing in Irish seas while our diminished stocks and fishing communities recover,” he said.
He also believes all resources below Irish soil and sea pertain to the Irish people and any speculation and development of these resources must be agreed on and voted for at county level providing it fulfils national and EU environmental guidelines.
