RYAN VAIL, twice nominated for the Northern Ireland Music Prize, will bring his acclaimed fusion of electronica and modern classical music to Strange Brew at the Róisín Dubh tonight at 9pm.
The Derry-born artist, who fuses the two forms of music through unique instrumentation, and an emphasis on the immediacy of live performance, came to wide attention in 2015 with Sea Legs, a collaborative album with songwriter Ciaran Lavery. It was nominated for the Northern Ireland Music Prize in 2015.
Ryan’s own debut album, For Every Silence, released in 2016, earned him his second Northern Ireland Music Prize nomination, while last month saw the release of Distorted Shadows, Ryan’s first album as a full-time musician. The record is a "call for art, soul and self-belief during difficult times". Nylon has called the album "a minimalistic, electronic dream.” The Independent called it a "daring and emotionally affecting work that deserves your full attention." Stereogum declared the artist had "a sound all his own.”
