Two world premieres, two new plays, from Druid

Galway International Arts Festival 2018 drama at The Mick Lally Theatre

THE MICK Lally Theatre on Druid Lane will be a hub for new work during the Galway International Arts Festival, presenting new plays, featuring leading actors, in several daily performances over 17 days.

Druid's Mick Lally Theatre will host two world premieres: Furniture by Sonya Kelly, a former comedian, and Shelter, the professional debut from Cristín Kehoe. Both received staged readings in 2016 and 2017 respectively as part of the Druid Debut process, and both explore opposite ends of the spectrum of modern Ireland.

"Sonya and Cristín are part of an exciting new wave in Irish writing," said artistic director Garry Hynes. "I’m delighted Druid is premiering their plays, where audiences will be able to see both productions in one day. Add to the mix the great talent that has come on board with Cathal Cleary and Oonagh Murphy as directors, and a cast of over a dozen actors, including members of the Druid Ensemble, and I think the MLT is going to be fizzing with excitement during the festival."

Told through the lives of six individuals, Furniture is a comedy examining how we covet possessions, and the means by which we shape our worldview. Directed by Cathal Cleary, it stars Niall Buggy, Peter Campion, Garrett Lombard, Clare Monnelly, Rebecca O’Mara, and Aisling O’Sullivan. Previews are on July 12 (8pm ) and July 14 (5pm ). It runs at 8pm on July 16, 18, 20, 23, 25, and 27, and at 5pm on July 17, 19, 21, 23, 24, 26, and 28.

In Shelter, Fus is hiding out in a disused warehouse when he learns Tommy has lost his job and their hideaway is under threat. As friends trickle through the building, they drink, dance, row, and reminisce while the clock counts down. Oonagh Murphy directs. The cast includes Brendan Conroy, Lauren Larkin, Aaron Monaghan, and Rory Nolan. Previews are July 13 and 14 at 8pm. It runs at 8pm on July 15, 17, 19, 21, 22, 24, 26, 28 and 29; at 5pm on July 18, 20, 25, and 27; and at 3pm on July 22 and 29.
