Students selected for Celtic Games

NUI Galway athletes have received a number of call ups for the Irish Universities squad to compete in the upcoming Celtic Games match versus Scotland.

Talon Thompson and Finley Daly of NUI Galway have both been selected on the 3000m steeplechase team. Bridget McDyer is named in the shot putt, Aisling Forkan over 400m, Aengus Meldon at 800m, and Sarah Quinn in the 100m hurdles.

At home there was a new winner in the 2018 Galway 5km Series. Held in Loughrea with another massive field in attendance, Philip Niland of Celbridge AC was first man home.

He edged out Craughwell's Damien Larkin in a dramatic sprint finish with both men clocking the same time of 17.14.

Greg Lundon of South Galway AC was third in 17.39, and the first woman home was Aine O'Farrell of Athenry AC in a time of 19.07, with Deirdre Brophy of Athenry, second in 19.39 and Niamh Hennelly of GCH third in 19.43. Athenry are scheduled to host the series on May 22.

The dates for the 2018 Galway Track and Field Senior Championships have been announced, with the first day being Thursday May 24 at the Dangan track, NUI Galway. Day two follows on Thursday May 31. The first day’s schedule features the 100m,400m,1500m,100m and 110m hurdles, shot putt, javelin and long jump events.

The programme will kick off at 7pm.

Day two will see the following events 200m, 800m, 3000m (women )/5000m men, 400m hurdles, discus, weight throw, high jump, triple jump and relays.

The Connacht Schools Track and Field championships take place this Thursday in Athlone IT.
