Galway women hit Cats for nine

Galway Women’s FC put nine past Kilkenny United in their first outing in the league cup at a sun-drenched Eamonn Deacy Park on Sunday afternoon.

A scintillating opening half put the home side ahead by 7-0 at the break - the first arriving after just nine minutes old when Shauna Fox headed home an excellent Lynsey McKey cross.

McKey continued to torment the visitors, and for the second goal her low cross from the left was deflected into the net by Kilkenny defender Shauna Martin

Next New York native Carlie Schect struck superbly from 30 yards, and a minute later, McKey got on the end of a Méabh De Búrca ball over the top to calmly finish past the advancing Megan Butler. Four minutes later with just 26 minutes gone, Aislinn Meaney found Sadhbh Doyle on the right and she blasted home from an acute angle.

With 35 on the clock Doyle was on hand to tap home after Butler had saved a Meaney shot. On the stroke of half-time Sinead Donovan capitalised on a weak clearance to grab Galway’s seventh.

Donovan also pounced within minutes of the restart with Doyle picking her out after good work down the right. Galway finished off the scoring with 12 minutes to go when McKey made no mistake after another Meaney shot was saved.

Galway return to league action this Saturday evening at 6pm when they host newcomers Limerick FC in Eamonn Deacy Park. There of course the fixture will have the added attraction that the visitors boast four former Galway players which is sure to add to the intensity of the game.

Galway WFC: Tina Hughes (Louise Creaven 40 ), Carlie Schecht, Méabh De Búrca, Shauna Fox, Lucia Lobatto, Emma Starr, Tessa Mullins (Aoife Thompson 49 ), Sinead Donovan, Sadhbh Doyle, Aislinn Meaney, Lynsey McKey.
