Hyperbaric oxygen therapy clinic now open in Galway

A state of the art Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT ) Clinic has opened on Merchant Road in the city offering therapeutic and healing treatment to the people of Galway and beyond.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT ) is the breathing of pure oxygen through a mask, in a pressurized room or chamber. HBOT is known for its treatment of decompression sickness, a hazard of diving, it is now mainly used in the treatment of other conditions including serious infections and wounds that will not heal, as a result of diabetes or radiation injury.

There are over 65 HBOT clinics in the UK that specialise in the therapeutic treatment of multiple sclerosis sufferers. Despite the lack of absolute medical evidence HBOT is recommended by doctors to MS sufferers who report that HBOT treatments have slowed the progression of the disease, improved quality of life and reduced long term pain and suffering.

In the OxyGeneration HBOT chamber, the air pressure is increased to two times higher than normal air pressure, which is equivalent to diving 10 metres underwater. While the chamber is being pressurised the user may experience some popping in the ears, similar to that experienced on a commercial flight. Once the chamber is pressurised the user puts on an oxygen mask and breathes pure oxygen for 60 minutes. Under these conditions, your lungs can absorb much more oxygen and deliver it to the bloodstream than would be possible breathing pure oxygen at normal air pressure.

Your blood carries this increased oxygen throughout your body and this helps fight bacteria and stimulates the release of substances called growth factors and stem cells, which promote healing.

HBOT is also used by many sports clubs and athletes to speed up recovery after sports injury, strain and inflammation.

Many surgeons and oncologists refer their patients for HBOT treatment before and after surgery, or radiation treatment, as the increased supply of oxygen to the body tissue enhances healing, helps prevent and cure infection and reduces recovery time.

More recently, according to the well-respected Mayo Clinic in the US “HBOT has also been used as an adjunct to standard medical therapy in patients with refractory inflammatory bowel disease (IBD ), especially perianal Crohn’s disease (CD ) and acute ulcerative colitis (UC ).”

OxyGeneration invites people to come in to their state of the art clinic on Merchants Road to see the facilities and talk to the staff about HBOT.
