Galway Women inflict double woes on Bohs

On Saturday afternoon Galway Women’s FC defeated Bohemians home and away in the U17 and senior FAI Women’s National League.

The seniors travelled to the Oscar Traynor Centre and must have thought they were in for an easy afternoon when after 17 minutes a challenge by Bohemians' goalkeeper Courtney Maguire on Aoife Thompson saw Bohs reduced to 10. However, it was not until 52 minutes when Galway made the advantage count when Thompson opened the scoring, and that only lasted two minutes when Bronagh Kane equalised for the Dubliners.

The party of European football's finest starts in only eight days time when France take on Romania at the Stade de France. It is hard to believe the tournament is so close on the horizon. However, one must remember that Galway and the rest of the province were so consumed by the exploits of Pat Lam's heroes in green that pretty much every other aspect of life in the west took a back seat.

However these championships will soon capture the public's imagination with four teams from these Isles taking part, and with Leicester City winning the Premier League and Connacht claiming the Guinness Pro 12, who is to say that we are not in for another special sporting surprise in France.

All at Galway United, in both our National League senior and underage teams are keen to return to training and playing football as soon as practical. However, we are also conscious that we need to do so in an environment that secures the health and safety of all involved and that follows the guidance and advice of both the FAI and the HSE.

In addition to the priority of returning in a safe environment, Galway United like all other League of Ireland clubs need clarity on the financial support that will be provided to enable a successful and sustainable return to football. This clarification is expected from the FAI later this week.
