Big challenge for Galway WFC against cup holders

This weekend Galway WFC's attention turns to the FAI Cup when they host holders Wexford Youth on Saturday.

Cup specialists Wexford will be looking to bounce back from their league defeat to Cork City at the weekend, but Galway's memory is longer. They will be looking for revenge at having been dumped out of the cup in last year’s semi-finals by the same opposition, and hoping home advantage will be enough to get them over the line.

Last weekend they continued their strong league form, defeating Limerick side Treaty United 1-0 in their FAI WNL game in Eamonn Deacy Park.

The only score of the game came in the dying moments for the first half when Chloe Singleton got on the end of a delightful through ball from Savannah McCarthy to fire home low and hard.

Although Galway dominated for long periods of the game, they failed to add to the scoreboard although Lynsey McKey and Aoife Thompson came close.

Although they continued to come up short, Singleton’s strike was enough for the Tribeswomen, giving them a five-point lead over the Shannonsiders in the race for the top five before the league splits in two.
